From Vision to Action: Bringing Your BHAG to Life with V2MOM

In this new season of life, I’ve found myself drawn to something deeper than just a to-do list. Retirement, for me, is no longer about filling time it’s about living with intention. That’s why I’ve started shaping some BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) into bold, personal visions for what a meaningful, well-lived life could look like.

But naming a BHAG is just the start. The real challenge? Turning that dream into action.

That’s where the V2MOM framework comes in.

A Simple Tool with Serious Impact

Originally developed by Marc Benioff, founder of Salesforce, V2MOM was designed to keep organisations aligned and focused during rapid change. But its genius lies in its simplicity and it works just as well for life planning as it does for business strategy.

V2MOM helps you break down a big goal into clear, manageable parts so you can move forward with purpose and flexibility. Whether you’re designing a new life chapter or navigating a transition, it’s a practical compass you can come back to again and again.

What is V2MOM?

It stands for:

  • Vision – What you want to achieve.
  • Values – The principles that guide you.
  • Methods – The actions you’ll take.
  • Obstacles – The challenges you’ll face.
  • Measures – How you’ll track progress.

Putting It Into Practice

One of my BHAGs is to Create A Sanctuary In Nature, where life slows down, the food is homegrown, and there’s space to breathe. Here’s how that looks through the V2MOM lens:

  • Vision: A calm, nature-filled home that supports a slower, more intentional way of life.
  • Values: Simplicity, sustainability, faith, aesthetics, rest.
  • Methods: Define what “sanctuary” means, explore rural locations, research housing options, start simplifying possessions, think slow living requirements
  • Obstacles: Budget, limited housing availability, decision fatigue.
  • Measures: Location chosen, home secured, veggies planted, growing sense of peace in daily life.

Why It Works

A BHAG on its own can feel daunting, but V2MOM gives it structure. It keeps you connected to why your goal matters, how you’ll get there, and what to watch out for. It’s not a rigid plan, it’s a living guide.

So, if there’s a big dream stirring in you, give it shape. Run it through a V2MOM. Because this next chapter deserves your best thinking and your boldest hopes.
