A Monthly Rhythm Template To Help You Focus

We previously explored how living with rhythm and not rigid rules can help create a life with more flow and less overwhelm. We shared a Weekly Rhythm Template, but a thoughtful question came up:

“What if you’re in full-time work and your weeks are mostly fixed?”

That sparked something bigger: perhaps what’s also needed is a Monthly Rhythm Template. A tool that helps zoom out, notice what’s needed, and bring intentionality to a longer stretch of time.

After a week of reflecting (and a few conversations over coffee), it became clear that this would be a useful addition to the rhythm toolkit.

Why Monthly Rhythms Matter

Weeks fly by. Days fill up. It’s easy to lose sight of what really matters.

But pausing at the start of each month gives us space to ask:

“What matters most right now?”

Whether it’s hosting friends, finishing a long-delayed task, or simply making space to rest.  monthly rhythms help you focus, reset, and grow without trying to do everything at once.

They also ties in beautifully with those V2MOMs (your big picture goals). Each month becomes a chance to bring one or two of those into sharper focus.

A Gentle 3-Part Flow

This is not about pressure or perfection. The Monthly Rhythm Template is designed to be light, printable, and flexible. It has been designed to Set Direction, Check In and Refocus; and finally Reflect and Learn. Let’s explain:

 1. Start of Month – Set Direction

Take 15-20 minutes to name what you want this month to be about. Begin by tuning into what your life is asking for — before jumping into what you want to achieve.

What I Need More Of / Less Of

This isn’t about adding pressure — it’s about creating the conditions you need to thrive.

Ask:

  • What’s been missing or feeling out of balance?
  • What fuels you that’s been absent?
  • What’s draining you that you could ease off?

(Think energy, space, rest, connection, joy… not just tasks.)

Examples:

  • More of: quiet mornings, movement, fresh air, creative flow, prayer, quality time
  • Less of: rushing, screen time, clutter, comparison, saying yes too often

Let this reflection shape how you focus your time and energy this month.

Focus Areas (1–2 V2MOMs)

Now bring your wider life goals into view. Look at your V2MOMs and ask:

“Which of these feel most relevant or urgent for this month?”

Focus Areas relate to the Methods section of your V2MOMs, the practical things you do to move a goal forward. Choosing 1 or 2 V2MOMs helps you stay focused and realistic, especially in busy seasons.

You’re not trying to do it all but rather take a few small, intentional steps forward in one or two areas.

This Month I Want To…

List 3–5 meaningful intentions, habits, or project tasks. The things that come out of ‘What I need more of’ and ‘Focus Areas’ thinking.

These could be:

  • New or renewed habits (e.g. daily movement, tech boundaries)
  • One-off projects (e.g. redesign a space, finish a lingering task)
  • People-focused goals (e.g. host a meal, reconnect with someone)
  • Maintenance priorities (e.g. review finances, digital declutter)

Keep it realistic. Not everything needs finishing — some things just need starting.

Why These Matter Right Now

Help yourself stay motivated by connecting your intentions to your current context.

Ask:

  • Why is this important to me this month?
  • What will it help unlock, resolve, or support?
  • What might happen if I ignored this again?

Key Dates Already in the Diary

Anchor your hopes in reality by scanning what’s already booked in.

  • Are there weeks that are already full?
  • Any holidays, visitors, appointments, or work peaks?
  • What’s fixed — and what’s flexible?

This helps shape a more sustainable and grace-filled plan for the month.

2. Light-Touch Mid-Month Check-In & Refocus

Life changes. Energy shifts. Halfway through the month, take a few minutes to pause and realign.

“What’s working? What’s feeling stuck? What one thing do I want to focus on next?”

No big reset rather a moment to reduce pressure, celebrate small wins, and gently refocus.

Try asking:

  • What’s felt good so far?
  • Is anything slipping that still matters?
  • What’s the one thing I want to prioritise in the next two weeks?
  • What can I let go of (for now)?

Tip: This can easily be part of your weekly rhythm in Week 2 or 3. Take 5–10 minutes check-in with a notebook and a cuppa.

3. End of Month – Take some time to Reflect + Learn

Don’t skip this step. Reflection helps us spot what’s working, track growth, and move forward with more wisdom.

  • Highlights & Wins
  • What Surprised Me
  • What Didn’t Happen (and does it still matter?)
  • Gratitude List (3–5 things)
  • One Word to Describe the Month

This Is About Progress, Not Perfection

You might start the month with ten ideas. But even good intentions can compete. That’s why this template helps you focus on just a few things, and then gently pace them out through the month.

Some months you’ll fly. Others, you’ll adapt. Either way, you’re living with more intention and that’s a win.

What’s Next?

Well you could download the Monthly Rhythm Template and give it a go.

And for me I need to write the next chapter on how I prioritize what V2MOMs get focus each month.

Question for You:

What’s helped you stick to a rhythm in the past?

And what tends to knock you off course?
