As we progressed through January several people asked about my New Year resolution. And I must confess I was deliberately cryptic – “it’s big and it’s going to take a while” was about all I’d share. The truth is, this isn’t a resolution in the traditional sense. It’s multi-year, it’s transformational and it has a specific end date and a comprehensive set of outcomes. It even now has a name: Project 64. Along with a name goes a fully formed V2MOM to keep me aligned and on track.
Why 64? All will become clear. For now, just know it’s ambitious, long-term, multi-faceted and it’s underway.
January Progress
So how is progress ? I would say all in all January was positive: 4.5kg lost; two rides completed and documented despite the brutal weather; the first assessment / qualification weekend is booked for May; a further training course identified and ready to schedule; close to completing on the first revenue generating initiative. So definite progress.
Furthermore gym attendance averaged twice per week – not bad for January, but it needs to increase. Three times per week in February, then four by March. The trajectory is clear.
Why is this so important? For those who know me well also know the problems I have with my knees. They are a potential point of failure to the entire project. So like all good project managers I am keen to mitigate this risk and so building up strength and flexibility is essential. So a question we all need to ask – what potential risks could derail your transformation projects? And are you mitigating the risk?
The Real Challenge
But here’s what I know about transformational change: it’s not the big milestones that trip you up. It’s the fundamentals. For the early stages of Project 64 fundamentals mean: good sleep hygiene; proper hydration; and consistent gym attendance. The boring basics that don’t generate dopamine hits or Instagram posts.
And here’s the other thing I am very conscious of – motivation fades after month one. The excitement of “New Year, New me” evaporates when it’s still dark, still cold, and very wet (another named storm.. really). February is where most transformation projects die quietly, but not this one.
February: Focus On The Foundations
So February is about foundations. Not new initiatives. Not exciting breakthroughs. Just executing the basics consistently enough that they become automatic. So to keep the focus I’ve built a simple scorecard to track this. Daily tick boxes. Weekly summaries. No room for creative interpretation. Either I did it or I didn’t.
The scorecard tracks the core foundations:
Sleep hygiene: In bed & lights off by 10:30pm
Hydration: Minimum of 1.5 liters of water daily
Gym consistency: Three sessions per week
Nothing complex. Nothing clever. Just the basics that enable everything else.
Your Own Transformation
If you’re working on your own transformation – whether that’s fitness, career change, or something else entirely – and you’re feeling the motivation waver, try this: identify your three foundational behaviors. The boring basics that enable everything else. Build a simple scorecard. Track them daily. Make them visible.
It’s not glamorous. But it works.
Because here’s the thing: Project 64 isn’t about having a good January. It’s about executing the fundamentals consistently. Establishing a strong foundation as without this everything becomes exponentially harder.
The foundations come first. Everything else builds on top.
So February here we come.
